H2 Economy: Recycling Solutions for the Future
Anna Marchisio, Business Development Manager, Hensel Recycling GmbH
Anna Marchisio is Business Development Manager from Hensel Recycling GmbH, based in Aschaffenburg, Germany. Hensel Recycling was founded in 1998 and it is due to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. Its main business is in recycling of platinum group metal (PGM) containing products including automotive pollution control catalysts, oxygen-sensors, and e-scrap. More recently it has begun to work on recycling of PGM-containing fuel cells.
Anna gave a presentation as part of a webinar hosted by Hydrogen Moves on February 28th along with her colleague from Hensel Recycling’s daughter company IDO-Lab GmbH, Orhun Dedici – project manager of fuel cell recycling. The presentation covered the different stages of recycling loops from a product’s end-of-life (EoL) to its re-usage in new items. The stages in between require fastidious processes for collection, dismantling, homogenization, sampling and analysis, PGM value estimation, refining and precious metal recovery.
This process reduces the CO2 footprint of PGM by around 12-fold compared to if PGM is not recycled.
Hensel Recycling is a participant of a consortium with eight other partners on the European funded Clean Hydrogen Project – BEST4Hy which focuses on the development of new technologies to recover critical raw materials from EoL fuel cells – both PGM and SOFC, with Hensel Recycling focusing on the PGM fuel cells. The BEST4Hy project is aiming to scale the process from technology readiness level 3 (TRL3) to TRL5. Hensel Recycling has three key areas of interest: disassembly of stacks, closed loop recycling of PGM via its HRT process and recovery and reuse of the ionomers.
